Day 11 (May 6) - Fort Wayne, IN

104 miles - 7 hrs 2 min.
Update, as promised... Eric here. Part of Indiana, I think, is in a different time zone, but here in Fort Wayne it is a little after 8:30, and we are watching Wolf Blitzer and the rest of the nattering nabobs pontificate about poll results that aren’t yet in. Hillary? Obama? Hillary?!? OBAMA?!?!?!!!

I biked 25 miles today. Carson did more than four times that, yet he is... well, “growing stronger” isn’t quite right, because he’s a tank as always, but I see that gleam in his eyes: Oregon! (Carson: it’s delirium.)

So far on the trip, there have been two flat tires and a broken spoke. Fortunately, all of this has happened to me (and, embarrassingly, only one incident – a flat – took place as I was actually riding!). I was just at a bike shop here in Fort Wayne having the spoke fixed just before closing time at Summit City Bicycles and Fitness (they were awesome to me – props, jets, and rockets to Tim Wegner for performing the emergency surgery!), and I explained this part of my role on the trip as grappling with bad karma, negative spirits, and evildoers, to leave Carson free to concentrate on the journey itself, stretching that thin blue line on Google rapidly westward. I continue to shake my head in amazement.

With any luck, in defiance of the forecast, there will be a huge thunderstorm overnight, and then cyclonic tailwinds from the east tomorrow, for our usual 6:30 start.

Notice! Carson added photos to some of the earlier blog entries. Scroll down. Now!

I don't suppose you're passing through Elkhart County tomorrow, the homeland of Erik-2 and most recently proven to be "Obama's people." If you somehow swerve north, send greets to Elkhart for me. Watch out for Amish buggies on the road.

And by the way, all of Indiana is currently on Central Time. In the winter most parts are on Eastern Time.

Go Tim Wegner!

Sorry, long time no Indiana...I guess they changed the rules from 2006-07 and now there isn't such a thing as "Indiana time." It looks like most of the state is now in the Eastern Time Zone and does in fact observe daylight savings time. First the Amish are voting Obama and now this! Sorry about filling your blog comments with such gibberish.

Carson, Eric - Theresa just sent me the link to your journey (which makes for a fascinating read in 1 sitting). I am in awe! All I can think is "Run, Forrest, Run!" Go you! XO

This is so great -- We not only get to exercise vicariously through you two, but we get to meet your family! Hi, “mom” and “mary”! Is there any way for YOU two to post pictures on this blog? I know we’d all love to see Carson’s first tricycle or Eric’s high-school monster-truck-repair-squad photo.

And, oh yes, you’ll love biking across the Great Plains. There’s a park in Kansas called Coronado Heights. The story I was told is that it’s where Coronado took his men up on a mountain, after weeks of exploring. He looked to the horizon. Saw more of the same. Said, “Enough! Turn it around.”

But, you know … that was just Coronado … I’m sure you’ll love every inch of it.

You know me well enough to read between the lines: I’m still so jealous of the adventure you are on that I can hardly stand it.
