Day 4 - Tunkhannock, PA

The first time I was in Pennsylvania was in 1996. I was in one of two vans loaded to the gills headed on an overnight drive from Boone, NC to New York City. It was part of some trip a first-year college class I was in was taking. I woke early in the morning to find Pennsylvania - with mountains as silhouettes. I looked over to Amanda from Pittsburgh and said, "Pennsylvania looks like the moon with trees."

Today PA felt like that. Hard, slow, grinding day. All's well that ends well, though - and Tunkhannock, a nice, old town, is drenched in sunshine.

I hope the bike featured at the top of your blog isn't the bike you're using for your trip...

Carson, my good friend Kathy who biked across the US in the 70s said that PA was the worst part.
FYI it's the fault of Africa, which crashed into proto-north america about 300 mya. you're biking over ridges created by stacked layers of harder and softer rock, which were tipped on their sides sometime before nearly all Paleozoic life was wiped out and the dinosaurs started to emerge. Those rock layers were created back when lingering trilobites and the first fishes were getting going (watch your ankles, they had sharp teeth).

Hey Carson and Eric,
I didn't realize how jealous I would be of your trip. I'm even jealous of your slow grinding day.
You're probably biking as I'm sitting here typing.

I can't believe you stopped in Tunkhannock! I have a good friend who lives there, and am surprised that the minuscule town could come up in any other context. Good luck continuing with the trip. - Josh
